AE Completes Shoreline Stabilization for US Air Force Base
Angler Environmental (AE) contracted with AMEC Earth & Environmental to stabilize a shoreline located within a residential sector of the Dover, DE United States Air Force Base. The shoreline, bordering the St. Jones River, evidenced signs of significant bank erosion and prompted fears of a wash-out. AE was contracted to restore and stabilize three distinct segments of the shoreline. In total, this shoreline stabilization required class one rip-rap revetment, 604 live stakes, and 2800 brush bundles, cumulating in 565 linear feet of soil lifts with coir matting.
Work also included the installation of a concrete drainage structure with wing walls, rip-rap stone, and green gabion baskets (pictured below). These gabions were strategically placed to protect the renovated drainage structure and were filled with a mixture of topsoil, gravel and live stakes planted into the baskets.

AE kicked off the month of April at the 21st Annual Environment Virginia Symposium, “Sustainable Solutions for Uncertain Times.” In keeping with the theme of environmental sustainability and innovation, AE was selected to present its most recent mitigation bank, The Prince William Environmental Bank (PWEB). Located on public, park-owned lands in Prince William County, VA, PWEB represents a unique public/private partnership between the county, the local park authority, and Angler Environmental. While AE provides all funding for the stream bank’s design, permitting, and construction, the Park Authority receives restored park streams and revenue from credit sales, all at zero cost. Additionally, the county enjoys discounted credits for its projects and keeps the restoration benefits of mitigation within county boundaries.

An innovative solution to sustainability obstacles in tight times, PWEB promises both economic and environmental benefit for all involved parties. AE was excited to share this model with fellow environmental professionals at Environment VA in hopes that other localities can realize the significant advantages of this unique partnership.

Educational Outreach: Senior Ecologist leads student tour of AE mitigation site; Students adopt AE model for wetland hydrology

Just days after presenting soil research at the Society of Wetland Scientists joint chapter meeting, AE ecologist Brad Petru led a group of students from Old Dominion University on a tour of an AE wetland mitigation site. AE designed and built the site with state-of-the-art technology in wetland hydrology analysis, producing 3-D topographic and groundwater fluctuation models that facilitate wetland designs that significantly reduce site grading requirements. As a result, soil disturbance and excessive compaction during construction are minimized.
As ODU students are adopting AE’s model for their research, Mr. Petru personally led a tour of the site, providing first-hand expertise on the inner workings and benefits of AE’s hydrologic model.  Additionally, AE has given permission to the students to conduct on-site sampling and data analysis for their research. This invitation to investigate in-house mitigation sites not only supports the community in terms of educational growth, but also ensures more rigorous monitoring for AE mitigation sites.
